Chessie targets K-3rd graders. Students build both confidence and comprehension skills by selecting books to read at home and then meeting with volunteers to answer questions about what they've read. This program starts before school at 7:40am in the Media Center and students participate from when the bell rings to approximately 8:15am. This SPES award-winning reading program has been a favorite among students and parents in the school for many years.

As part of the program, students earn rewards by choosing and reading various books from the Media Center designated for their reading level by their teachers. For the '26 - '27 school year, Chessie will run from October 12th - May 6th:

• Mondays/Wednesdays: Kindergarten & 2nd Grade (Kindergarteners start in January 2027)
• Tuesdays/Thursdays: 1st & 3rd Grade
